South Brazil, particularly the state of Santa Catarina, is bracing for continued severe weather, including heavy storms, floods, and landslides. Over the past week, 22 municipalities in Santa Catarina have experienced flooding, leading to evacuations. Joinville, the state’s largest city, has been particularly hard hit, with consistent rainfall forecast until early this week.
The municipality of Dionísio Cerqueira recorded the highest rainfall in the past 48 hours at 186.4 mm, significantly increasing the risk of landslides. Authorities have issued warnings for potential “moderate to high-risk” meteorological events due to a cloud front moving from central South America toward the Atlantic Ocean.
This year has seen repeated bouts of extreme weather in the region, including deadly floods in neighboring Rio Grande do Sul earlier in the year, which caused significant loss of life and widespread damage. Brazil’s Civil Defense is working closely with local governments to monitor the situation and respond swiftly to emergencies.
