External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reaffirmed India’s dedication to fostering mutually beneficial relationships with both Africa and Japan. Speaking at the Japan-India-Africa Business Forum, he emphasized India’s commitment to collaborative development and strategic partnerships.
Strengthening Ties with Africa
Jaishankar highlighted India’s approach to Africa, focusing on building long-term, mutually advantageous partnerships. He noted that India is Africa’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $100 billion. Additionally, India has invested over $75 billion in Africa, encompassing infrastructure and connectivity projects worth more than $12 billion. This commitment extends to capacity-building initiatives, such as the e-Vidya Bharti and e-Arogya Bharti networks, which provide virtual education and medical services to African nations. Students from 19 African countries have enrolled in various courses under this program.
Deepening Relations with Japan
Regarding Japan, Jaishankar underscored the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” between the two nations. He emphasized the shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, along with a common vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar called for the development of ambitious targets to further enhance bilateral cooperation, highlighting Japan’s role as a key contributor to India’s economic development.
