This law was passed by the Netanyahu government in July 2023, months after which the Supreme Court took this decision to overturn the law after many ups and downs. According to this law, the powers of the Supreme Court and lower courts were removed, allowing them to overrule government decisions considered inappropriate in Israel.
According to a BBC report, there was a huge protest against this law. Thousands of protesters took to the streets to repeal this law. The protesters were also demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
This law was also opposed by hundreds of soldiers and Air Force pilots. He opposed this law and threatened that if this law was not repealed, he would resign.
In a statement given on Monday, the Supreme Court said that 8 out of 15 judges have given their verdict against this law. In their decision, those eight judges said that this law would cause “serious and unprecedented harm to the fundamental characteristics of Israel as a democratic country.” ,
Israel’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin has criticized the judges, objecting to the decisions taken by the judges. He believes that the Supreme Court has taken all powers into its own hands by canceling the judicial reform law passed by Netanyahu’s government. Justice Minister Yariv Levin called this decision of the Supreme Court undemocratic.
