Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York on Monday, 23 September. During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi spoke about India’s all possible help to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. This was the second meeting between the leaders of the two countries within a month.
Prime Minister Modi attended several high-profile events during his three-day visit to the US, including attending the fourth Quad Leaders Summit held in Wilmington on Saturday.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the UN summit and discussed the current situation in Ukraine as well as the way forward on the path of peace.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during the meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s “clear, consistent and constructive” approach in support of a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
Earlier, PM Modi visited Ukraine on 23 August and reiterated India’s desire to contribute in every possible way for the early return of peace in the Ukraine conflict. Diplomatic relations between India and Ukraine were established in 1992. Since then, this is the first time that an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine. PM Modi visited Ukraine at the invitation of President Zelensky.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared a photo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the social media platform X and wrote, met President Zelensky in New York, we are committed to implementing the bilateral relations that we emphasized on strengthening during my visit to Ukraine last month. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s support for an early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoring peace and stability.
Issuing a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that both the leaders recalled the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Ukraine and expressed satisfaction over the continued strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries. This was the third meeting between the two leaders in less than three months.
The Ministry of External Affairs said that the two leaders agreed to remain in touch.
Prime Minister Modi visited Ukraine in August at the invitation of President Zelensky. During his visit to Ukraine, the Prime Minister made it clear that India has often been considered neutral in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. India has always strongly advocated for peace in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
