San Francisco, Jan 3: Former US President Donald Trump has moved to challenge the decision of Maine’s top elections official, Maine Secretary of State Shenae Bellows, to include him on the state’s primary ballot. Was considered ineligible. On December 28, 2023, Bellows declared Trump ineligible to run in the upcoming US presidential primary election in Maine, citing his involvement in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol, Xinhua news agency reported.
In response to Bellows’ decision, the Trump campaign on Tuesday announced its intention to appeal the decision through Maine’s state courts. Bellows, in turn, chose to suspend his decision, deferring to the judicial system to make a final decision on the case.
The appeals process is expected to play out in Maine’s state courts, but the final decision on whether Trump will be included on the Maine primary ballot, as well as in other states, is likely to depend on the United States Supreme Court. The legal proceedings surrounding Trump’s eligibility promise to be a focal point as the nation approaches the upcoming presidential primary elections.
