The United Nations has expressed support for renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following a recent phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq stated, “We would appreciate any efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine that would involve the Russian and Ukrainian sides, so obviously if both of them are willing to be involved in the process, that would be a welcome development.”
During their 90-minute conversation, Presidents Trump and Putin discussed the situation in Ukraine, with both leaders expressing a desire to pursue peaceful negotiations. President Trump conveyed optimism about achieving peace in Ukraine and mentioned forthcoming discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The call was described as “highly productive,” and President Putin extended an invitation to President Trump to visit Moscow.
However, the prospect of U.S.-Russia-led negotiations has raised concerns among European leaders and Ukrainian officials. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the necessity of inclusive talks, stating, “Peace can only be achieved together. And that means: with … .” Similarly, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha insisted that any discussions regarding Ukraine’s future must involve Kyiv and reflect European security interests. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to NATO membership as a cornerstone of its security policy.
The international community remains attentive to these developments, recognizing the complex dynamics at play. While the UN welcomes initiatives aimed at ending the conflict, there is a consensus among European and Ukrainian leaders that any viable peace process must be comprehensive and inclusive, ensuring that the voices of all affected parties are heard and respected.
